Motorcyclists to Rally at State Leadership Summit

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and the Motorcycle Safety Program in conjunction with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) and the Maryland Highway Office is hosting the Leadership Summit. The Summit is designed to allow stakeholders in the motorcycling community to meet and discuss important issues of concern to motorcyclists in Maryland and to plan strategies to address the issues. The Summit will include five breakout sessions facilitated by members of the motorcycle community. Interested participants can still register at www.marylandmva.com. This past weekend four people died in three separate crashes on Maryland highways. Eighty-six motorcyclists died on Maryland highways in 2005, the most recent year for which complete information is available. A 2006 assessment of Maryland's Motorcycle Safety Program by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommended that MVA/SHA host a one-day stakeholder summit on motorcycle safety to identify safety problems, needs and opportunities. The goal of the Motorcycle Safety Summit is to allow the motorcyclist community to have an active voice in the effort to reduce the number of Maryland motorcycle crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Scores of motorcycle riders are expected to rider their motorcycles to the summit and line up in support of the summit and to show their support for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Speakers from the State of Maryland and the Federal Government will explain how these diverse groups are coming together to increase awareness and in recognition of the importance of motorcycle safety.
